Crime and Punishments in the Civil War

This makes interesting reading. The bondage in the pictures below was a common punishment in the French Foreign Legion where it was known as “The Crapaud” or “Toad. Apparently this punishment was also common during the American Civil War, where it was called “being bucked and gagged.” Click on the link below and scroll down and look for the section entitled ‘Common Punishments’ for find out more ways in which offenders were punished during the American Civil War.
